About Kalkan

With a population of around just 2000, virtually 365 days a year sunshine, warm clear blue seas and friendly people, it’s easy to see why people choose to live in Kalkan either permanently or semi-permanently. With the cost of living rising in England and Europe, Turkey is more affordable where your pound or euro goes further than at home. Turkey is slowly improving in terms of its modernisation and infrastructure, whilst retaining its original character and appeal. Anyone more familiar with Kalkan, knows it will take a long time before it is modernised or ‘europeanised’ which is the exact appeal to most people and why Kalkan is so popular. In summertime, Kalkan is vibrant and comes alive. Shops, restaurants and bars stay open late and locals and tourists alike enjoy themselves and have a good time. The narrow streets are bright and colourful with bourgainvillea overhanging the wooden balconies, and as you drift along you can smell the wonderful aromas from the many restaurants and listen to the gently playing music.
Kalkan has a typically Mediterranean, relaxed atmosphere and everywhere you go you will be invited to sit down and drink ‘cay’ (Turkish tea) before you continue on your merry way. A 30 minute trip to the shop can take up half a day! Such is the hospitality of the locals. Most people living here combine going out with staying in too. With most villas and apartments having terraces or balconies, alfresco dining and BBQ’s followed by a dip in the pool are the norm for most of the year. Christmas Day sees many people eating their traditional Turkey dinner in a t-shirt and sunglasses while sitting on their terrace! For a less traditional Christmas Day, serve up some ‘meze’ dishes (small, starter like dishes) served with Turkey’s national drink of Raki, a strong aniseed drink like Pernod, served in a raki glass with ice and water. If you want to make friends easily, buy some raki and invite your neighbours round.
